Study in China: Application Documents Checklist
A clear checklist of documents typically needed to apply to Chinese universities, with preparation tips for Pakistani and international applicants.

Why document preparation matters
Many otherwise strong applications are delayed or rejected because of avoidable document problems: an unreadable scan, a missing attestation stamp, or a name spelled differently on two certificates. Starting early gives you time to fix issues before deadlines.
The list below reflects documents commonly requested. Each university and scholarship route publishes its own list, and that official list is the one to follow.
Core academic documents
- Highest completed degree or certificate (e.g. Matric/SSC, FSc/HSSC, A-Levels, bachelor's or master's degree).
- Complete academic transcripts for that qualification.
- If you have not yet graduated: an expected graduation certificate from your institution.
- Certified English or Chinese translations for documents in other languages.
Identity and personal documents
- Passport valid for the period required by the university (often well beyond your planned arrival).
- Recent passport-style photographs to the specified size and background.
- Non-criminal record certificate, if requested.
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form, completed and stamped by a recognised hospital.
Supporting documents
- Study plan or personal statement written specifically for the programme.
- Research proposal for research-based master's and doctoral programmes.
- Recommendation letters, usually two for graduate applicants.
- Language certificates: HSK for Chinese-taught programmes; IELTS, TOEFL or an English-medium instruction letter for English-taught programmes, as accepted.
- Portfolio, publications or awards where relevant to your field.
- Financial guarantee or bank statement for self-funded applicants.
Notes for applicants from Pakistan
- Degree attestation: universities often ask for documents attested by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and/or the relevant Board, and sometimes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check which stamps your target institution requires.
- Name consistency: make sure your name matches your passport across every document, or prepare an explanation affidavit if it does not.
- Police character certificate: obtain it from the issuing authority in your district if a non-criminal record is required.
Formatting and upload tips
- Scan in colour at a resolution where every stamp and signature is legible.
- Name files clearly, e.g. 'Lastname_Transcript_BSc.pdf'.
- Respect file size limits and combine multi-page documents into one PDF.
- Keep a master folder of originals and certified copies for your visa appointment later.
Final check before you submit
Compare every upload against the official checklist one item at a time. Confirm dates, names and signatures, and keep copies of what you submitted. If anything is unclear, ask the university's international office directly — their answer outranks any third-party guide.
